Podge heads up Deep Cuts October humdinger as new music takes Phase One centre stage

Podge live at Brick Street

A feast of new artists head up October’s Deep Cuts, Getintothis’ Peter Guy on the latest sonic selection.

Right. No messing about on this one.

We’re cutting right to the chase: five fresh off the bat, boss new acts playing Phase One in Liverpool – it can only mean Deep Cuts. And it’s happening Thursday October 3.

We pride ourselves in scooping up the best new talent – and our next gig nails it. This lot have played less than half a dozen gigs between them – yet they’re all pure fire.

Podge is a name on many people’s lips within Merseyside. A natural vocalist who’s charisma oozes through his Cornelius and Manga-inspired melodic hip-pop.

We love him so much, we gave him Single of the Week for his latest cut, Twintails just released on the mighty fine Label Recordings.

Hammerhead Snails and Echoes are two bands we’ve literally discovered in the last week – the former an Ormskirk slacker rock collective with an ear for a hook, the latter a quartet who’ve shot out the blocks with their debut Out of Her Mind EP which collects kitchen sink poetry and whimsical Mersey pop which belies their youthful zeal.

Abby Meysenburg is Seattle born, Liverpool schooled songwriter who has written for Getintothis over the last year and is all set to show off her other talents with her Phase One debut.

Blending wistful stories, melancholic lyricism and beautifully orchestrated countrified instrumentation, we’re delighted to host one of our own.

Last up is The Merchants. We caught them in action at the Tony Butler tribute night and snapped ’em up straight away with our new music editor, Lewis Ridley effusively texting this writer during their performance.

The changing face of Liverpool’s music venues – where we at?

That they’ve been added to the sold out Mysterines headline gig at Jimmy’s is further evidence of their burgeoning potential.

That’s it. No fluff, all quality. All new. It’s what we do.

  • Deep Cuts takes place Thursday October 3 featuring Podge, Hammerhead Snails, Echoes, Abby Meysenburg and The Merchants. Tickets are available here.

Deep Cuts October

Meanwhile, here’s a look back at our September Deep Cuts which saw new rising outfits play alongside the more established Gintis at Phase One.

The Pelican Band mixed three-part harmonies with spectral folk and autumnal Americana while quintet The Inhaler Collective are a beguiling mix of psychedelic soul, west coast melodies and progressive sax-assisted jams.

Bandit proved an injection of balls with Arctics inspired rock and roll and some nifty flourishes of beat poetry before the evening was closed in jubilantly heroic style by the north Wales via Liverpool outfit Gintis.

All seven of ’em left the room buzzing and bopping into the wee small hours – another night of real swell times. Don’t miss the next one.
