Iconic label boss James Lavelle of UNKLE delivered a special meet and greet session, Getintothis’ Will Whitby went down to Jacaranda Record Phase One to check it out.
The performance by James Lavelle of UNKLE was the latest in a growing list of album signing and live show combo nights Phase One have been putting on.
More than just a night to see your favourite act, these are a lot more intimate and personal in the close surroundings of the ever-growing venue to both hear and meet belter acts.
Tonight was no exception with Lavelle smiling and signing copies of his latest release The Road: Part II / Lost Highway.
Taking to the stage slim and bespeckled and to little fanfare aside from a very modest hello, Lavelle got to work straight away with his table of Pioneer mixers.
Big sounds followed opening with On My Knees, a track featuring soul artist Michael Kiwanuka, smooth warm vocals joined with strong synthy strings to a full-body onslaught from the drums at the end which sounded massive on Phase One’s boss PA.
No fancy light shows or Steve Aoki chucking pies into people’s face, its just dance music at its heart- big hooks and even bigger beats
Remixing Massive Attack’s behemoth Unfinished Symphony to close, all I could remember was growing up with my dad playing early dance hits. Massive drums, percussive pleasures and addictive ear-grabbing vocals.
Its a sound that defined the 90s, and me discovering early dance as a teenager in the 2000s, the track conjures up so much respect, mystery and admiration as one thing is for certain – good dance music and iconic record selectors like James Lavelle will never lose their cool.
