A brand new documentary about Mo’Wax is coming to Liverpool, Getintothis’ Lucy McLachlan has tickets to give away to lucky readers.
The Man From Mo’Wax tells the extraordinary life of label boss James Lavelle and rollercoaster rise and fall of his musical empire.
Mo’Wax was at the forefront of underground music throughout the nineties and saw Lavelle release records with the likes of DJ Shadow, UNKLE and collaborate with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Massive Attack and Thom Yorke.
Formed in 1992 by obsessive record collector Lavelle, Mo’Wax quickly outlined its vision and what it stood for: turntablism, underground hip hop and graffiti artistry.
By fusing together Japanese culture and art, comic book artwork, vintage jazz and soul – and in particular those on Blue Note Records, and the very best in rising hip hop from around the globe, Lavelle‘s insatiable will to release records saw the label team up with iconic, yet relatively cult figures, including DJ Krush, Kool Keithaka Dr Octagon and Money Mark.
With drugs, major label involvement and ‘lunatics taking over the asylum,’ Lavelle shut the whole thing down in the mid-2000s.
The film shows a nonstop ride of growing up in the music industry brought together from over 700 hours of film spanning three decades.
