Having never performed in the city with The Gaslight Anthem, Getintothis’ Shaun Ponsonby is delighted to find Brian Fallon not ignoring Liverpool on his own.

Brian Fallon is making his Liverpool debut this November in support of his first solo effort Painkillers.

Incredibly, in the 10 years he has been fronting The Gaslight Anthem, with countless UK tours, the band have never stepped foot on a Liverpool stage. Fallon is finally putting that right with his solo band.

Hailing from New Jersey, Fallon first came to major prominence in the UK when Bruce Springsteen (very much the patron saint of New Jersey) joined The Gaslight Anthem onstage at Glastonbury for an obviously unrehearsed rendition of the title track from the latter’s breakthrough record, The ’59 Sound. The next day, Fallon returned the favour by appearing with Springsteen in Hyde Park, their duet of Born In The USA’s No Surrender being immortalised on the latter’s London Calling: Live In Hyde Park DVD.

Following this, the band achieved a handful of Top 20 albums – American Slang, Handwritten and Get Hurt – reaching as high as #2 in the UK album charts. Last year, however, they went on indefinite hiatus.

Fallon had been no stranger to solo projects with 2011’s widely acclaimed Elsie, recorded under the moniker The Horrible Crowes. The project was described by Fallon as “the darker side of soul music” and “hymns for lonely people”. Stylistically, his solo Painkillers falls somewhere between the two, but perhaps a little more refined and nuanced.

By the name he is using for this solo tour – Brian Fallon & The Crowes – it seems pretty clear to expect a mixture of Painkillers and Elsie, and with his solo band featuring both Horrible Crowes partner Ian Perkins and Gaslight Anthem guitarist Alex Rosamilia, it looks set to be the perfect culmination of Fallon‘s career so far.
