Yak return to Liverpool for headline Magnet show

YAK at the 02 Academy

After two impressive supporting appearances in the city, Yak are coming back and this time they’re topping a stellar line-up. Getintothis’ Lorna Gray is expecting big things.

A lot can be – and has been – said about London trio Yak. Their sporadic release of tracks including the single Hungry Heart and their debut EP Plastic People have teased and pleased and now left a vacuous space in the lives’ of noisy thrash fans as they patiently await more from the gnarly trio. So news of their return to Liverpool this month ahead of their NO EP release is met with anticipation and excitement after their thunderous, punky, grungy sounds blew crowds away in May’s Sound City performance.

This time swapping the disused warehouse venue for a more humble and intimate stage at The Magnet, expect a rammed show as local support from Liverpool psych favourites Strange Collective and jangly trippy guitar sounds from The Probes are bound to bring in the punters. Abbatoir Blues also take a support slot and being equally as noisy as the furious and unapologetic headliners, this show should come with a health warning, or at the very least a reminder: ‘Do not forget your ear plugs’.

Yak’s sound is menacing but also enticing, with repetitive distorted drones of vocals, sludgy, dirty yet punching guitar hooks and catatonic kraut-rock style drums; their return to the city is going to be a loud and drastic affair.

Don’t take our word for it, go see for yourself on November 20.
