Nelson: January

Nelson – one of Liverpool’s brightest hip hop propositions

As Liverpool’s hip hop newcomer releases new track January, Getintothis’ Adam Lowerson attempts to uncover the enigma that is Nelson.

There’s not a lot that we know about Nelson, Liverpool’s new hip hop starlet.

In fact other than his name, we don’t really know anything at all. But maybe that’s what is so intriguing about the 19-year-old MC. Having only released a small handful of tracks online, which have each appeared as if from nowhere without any fanfare, but always sounding fresh enough to get people talking, Nelson is somewhat of an enigma. His 2014 released songs Rhapsody and Grey did enough to earn him a mention in Getintothis’ Ones to Watch in 2015 before he disappeared into the shadows again.

But once again he is back, this time with a new song in the form of January, a slick jazz-hop slow burner released last week to cure the January blues.

The track sees Nelson take a different direction from his much darker, grittier opener Rhapsody with January seeing the MC with a much smoother flow over a warm, guitar jangle looped over understated hip hop beats. Nelson’s rapping is massively impressive, seemingly picking syllables from thin air with adventurous rhymes such as ‘Rhapsody’ with ‘Anglo-Saxony’, and comes complete with a charming Scouse twang.

How long will it be before we hear from Nelson again? Your guess is as good as ours. But whenever it is, we can’t wait, and the mystery surrounding just adds to the excitement of one of Merseyside’s most exciting new prospects.
