Introducing: John Joseph Brill

With his warming baritone vocals and dark lyricism, Getintothis’ Chris Selman discovers the haunting sounds of John Joseph Brill.

Liverpool-based singer songwriter John Joseph Brill has unveiled Muscle & Bone, the lead track from his new EP Pieces, which is released through Killing Moon on February 23.
While not an immediately obvious single – there aren’t any uplifting choruses or instant hooks here – it reveals itself after a few listens to be something rather special. Opening with some haunting backing vocals, Brill’s pleasingly warming baritone (somewhere between Nick Cave and The National) proves an excellent medium for delivering his dark prose.
Granted, it won’t be to everyone’s taste – it’s a slow burning affair, so you won’t catch us dancing badly at indie clubs to it – but it ebbs and flows rather wonderfully, swelling to an epic finale. Suitably serene, Sunday afternoon listening… and relax.
Assuming the other tracks on his EP match the quality of Muscle & Bone, and with a tour supporting BC Camplight scheduled this March, 2015 could shape up to be brilliant (sorry) for John Joseph Brill.
